The Namib Desert: How to photograph the splendid dunes of the Namib Desert

Curvy, shapely, beautiful ... What sounds like the attributes of a woman's body perfectly describes the dunes of the Namib Desert.

Once you put your attention to the aesthetic forms of the dunes' crests you'll find countless examples of stunning shapely dunes & thus great opportunities for amazing photographs.

Here are some helpful tips on what to look out for:

  1. The beauty of grand dune images lies foremost in the stark contrast between light and shade. The best conditions you'll find at sunrise and even more around sunset, when you'll have the richest orange color on the sunlit side of the dune and a deep, dark brown to black on the shadow side.

2. Another highly important feature of your stunning dune shots is a striking shape of the dune. Look out for clear lines that are curvy or swing up & down.

3. Compose your image for maximum impact: Let the crest line e.g. start in the bottom left corner of your image and lead diagonally towards the top right corner of your frame to create tension & interest.

We hope we could wake your appetite for trying to take stunning dune images on your next trip to the Namib Desert.
