The Good, the Bad or the Ugly? – Truths about a controversial pig
The world seems to be divided about this wild member of the pig family, the common warthog, as it is officially called.
There are warthog lovers, just like our friend Jan, who finds warthogs just plain amazing. She loves these creatures’ feisty character, admires their boldness and courage with which they attack even the mighty lion or leopard when their offspring is in danger and finds them refreshingly comical.
Then there are conservation & farm managers that loath them, because warthogs are notorious diggers. Countless holes are their days’ work along the park or farm fences. The problem lies not in the trespassing of the pigs onto neighboring land, but especially of lions that use these routes too. This gives the fence maintenance teams countless hours of additional work & the managers dealing with ‘lion problems’ outside of protected areas plenty of grey hair.
Lastly, there are those humans, who find warthogs plain ugly, but … mostly with a smile on their face. When we observed a warthog family grazing happily inside a parks’ camp on the lush, green lawn, another visitor next to me commented “ai, look how ugly they are, only their mothers can love them…
So, tell us, which side are you on – the Good, the Bad or the Ugly??
